I believe there is a balance between blowing your diet by saying “treat yo’ self, its vaca” and “I can have zero fun”. Its okay to have a cheat meal on vacation, you are on vacation for heaven’s sake, however, make sure your cheat meal doesn’t last all weekend long.
This Memorial Day Weekend I went to Pigeon Forge with my husband and family. Fuddruckers is my favorite place to eat and we don’t have one at home so there is just no way I could pass it up. So I ate there this weekend and I ate whatever I wanted. However, I only ate half of my meal and I only ate it one time. The rest of the trip I tried my best to maintain relatively healthy meals.
If there is any advice I would give it would be: don’t be too hard on yourself. If there is something you want really bad and can’t get at home, eat it! But like I mentioned, try to eat half of the portion and don’t eat it every day.
You may want to eat junk food while you’re gone and enjoy yourself with lots of calories, but just think about when vacation is over. Is that cupcake really worth it? Is enjoying that cupcake for 5 minutes worth going home and not being able to fit in those jeans you worked so hard to get into?
If the cupcake is worth it, then go for it! But like I said, maybe just eat a couple bites. I went to a knew ice-cream shop this weekend where they do the whole ‘role the ice-cream’ thing that is super popular on IG right now. I went more for the experience and to see what all the hype is about rather than for the actual ice-cream itself, but I went nonetheless. However, I ate a few bites and that was all. I still got to see how they made it, I still got to enjoy the experience, and I still got to even enjoy the product, but I didn’t go overboard and I didn’t feel bad after.
Aside from gaining weight while on vacation, another reason you should try your best to not lose all control is because its easier to get off track than back on. If you go on vacation and live it up, eat everything you want, forget about calories, and don’t make time to stay active, it’s going to be a lot easier to continue doing so once you get home. Its all about routine and maintaining that routine. If you just continue maintaining your healthy choices while on vacation then you will return home doing the same thing, keeping your routine.
So on the topic of routine, I try to walk/run 3 miles every evening. While on my weekend trip, I still walked every evening. I may not have walked 3 miles but I also didn’t just eat and lay down. Whether I went shopping and walked around in stores or walked around the town, I still made sure to walk in order to maintain that routine.
I am back home now after a weekend full of fun and great food. I weighed myself to see how I did while I was gone. I didn’t lose any weight, but I also didn’t gain any so I would say that is a win!
I hope this gives someone some motivation to stay strong during vacation season because I promise it will be worth it!
